So I go to a major sporting event every year and they out on a lot of top line acts before, during and after the action over the three days. It's an awesome event and I've seen bands I'd probably never cross the road for at home and been blown away by their performances. And I've seen old favorites who have updated their acts and are also great value. And there's the BIG acts that are duds. But they are all live musicians playing live. So this year the headline act is DJ Calvin Harris. I was disappointed that it wasn't a live band but I held my opinion in reserve until I saw the show. Conclusion: I just don't get it. One guy on a stage, usually in darkness, some pyrotechnics, lots of lights, and a huge sound but not a musical instrument in sight apart from a couple of turntables. 50,000 people gazing at the essentially empty stage with a look of deep inner wonder and excitement in their faces. Yes, this is "old man yells at cloud" territory but even my teen sons couldn't explain it nor wanted to stay for the whole act. Discuss... ( afterwards went to see a cover band at a bar just outside the venue, a bunch of 20 something's from the local conservatorium of music. Covers for sure but the musicality was astonishing.)
Simple - they are cheaper, they don't have to bother to lip-synch, and it always sounds just like the recorded version. Of course, why you'd pay to go to a venue to see one, no idea at all. But if it's a throw-in at a venue you already paid to go to for something else (sounds like) more promotor profit...
The Cult Of Personality or, as is often the case, Lack Of Personality. I'm just amazed that the fascination with DJs endures to this day.
