What is the difference between Math, Prog, Post, and Art Rocks

Prog rock is what it's always been. It's dead.

Math rock is time signature wankery above and beyond prog rockers' wildest dreams. Switching sigs every measure and such. There is always tapping. Always.

Post rock consists of veeery slow buildups. It's pretty spaced out.

Art rock is what people call avant garde bands that don't fit into the above categories, such as Sleepytime Gorilla Museum or The Book of Knots.

Nope nope nope, prog rock will never die for the drugs will never die. As long as psychoactive substances are popular - and they're popular, - prog rock lives, and ppl keep listening to it (the Mars Volta is a good example for it)
You know describing music is quite a silly way to understand it. And that applies for differences between 2 genres too. If you really want to understand the difference between prog, math, post-, and art, listen to the artists perfoming in these genres. Here I'd not recommend you modern artists, as most of them mix 2, 3 or even more genres in their works (for example, 65daysofstatic: their songs often lie on the edge between math and post-rock). Opening last.fm and clicking some tags will show you the best examples of artists performing in this genre. Here are some things I would recommend to understand the very difference:

- the dark side of the moon (Pink Floyd) - the best example of prog rock, IMO
- Genesis - a good example of prog rock either
- God is an astronaut - a modern post-rock band. Listening to them is a good way to understand that post-rock is, in term of instrumental sound, quite far from prog.
- Don Caballero - probably, the best example for understanding the way math rock sounds.

Besides, you should also take the time difference into consideration. Prog rock appeared in the time of early works of Pink Floyd and legal LSD usage and they're strongly associated with each other, math rock appeared in the 80s etc.

So Math Rock is strongly associated with cocaine and Ecstacy?
