What is the point of this setting?

I was browsing the TB settings page and noticed this option. Hmmm...

Why hide avatars? Does anyone do this?

I can only assume it's to speed up page loading for slower systems.

It would reduce the amount of data being downloaded to mobile devices. Helpful if you have a very low data cap on your mobile plan, and spend a lot of time on TB.
