Ok, I have what I thought was an Ibanez Ergodyne EDB500, but may be in fact an EDB500 neck with an EDB600 body. That would explain the grey pewter colored neck and the purple body, orrrr, did they make a 500 with the 5 knob configuration? Maybe someone can shed some light on this. I will try to post pics. It's a very playable and good sounding bass regardless. What's it worth?

After doing a little research I think it's a 600 body with a 500 neck, even though 1998 600s had grey headstocks.

The serial indicates it was made in July, 1998, but 500s only came in grey and had 4 knobs. Just my opinion, I don't know the whole story here.

I've had quite a few Ergodyne basses including three in the "B" series...EDB400, 500 and 600. That's a neck switcheroo as scourgeofgod mentioned.
The did make the 500 in other colors, just not for the US market I believe, I've seen white, black and purple elsewhere-they had the four knob configuration though - with the Phat EQ system.
The 600 has 5 knobs - with the 3 band EQ (just like yours and the one on the left hand side of my user pic)
The Ergodyne series EDA series - EDA900/905 (this is the one on the right hand side of my user pic- unusual looking basses with soapbar AND Piezo pickups)
EDB series - out of the Ergodyne basses, these are the ones that look most like normal bass guitars,
more EDB600s out there than any of the other Ergodynes.
EDC series- EDC700/705 and EDC710/715 - best sounding Ergodyne basses-
EDC710/715 have one triple coil pickup -this model is hard to find as it was only made for 1 year.
The best sounding Ergodynes to most collectors of these luthite basses (some later Ergodyne B models were made of wood) are as follows:- EDC700, EDB600, EDC710, EDA900 and the 5 string variants of each. They are great sounding basses Ibanez no longer makes- the luthite material wasn't too popular with most people (among other things, some have complained that the material smelled of petroleum ). Well, after 15 years, I can say the petroleum smell doesn't hold true anymore. lol
As a result these basses are great deals as they're great sounding basses usually at a really low price- if you can find them. Can't get into details due to the rules here in TB in terms of asking monetary worth of basses, but I'm going to say, lower than what the bass is really worth.

Much appreciated. You've all confirmed my suspicions. It's a frankenbass of sorts but it really is a good player. Now every time someone asks me what it is I can give them the real story hehe.
I really doubt there is much difference between the necks of 600s and 500s, your bass is basically a 600, it just says 500 on the back of the headstock.
Funny thing is in responding to your post, I've seen samples of a few Ergodynes, white, red and purple also with grey necks!

Take a look at this one - it's a white EDB600 with a grey EDB500 neck from Japan.

If so, kind of a special vibe, the very last of them. I always thought the looked nice, never got to try one.
They can be bought pretty cheaply these days- used to be a lot on the GC used site but slowly disappearing. I decided to keep only one Ergodyne bass, the EDA900 (the one on the right hand side in my user pic).
This is one I've yet to see in person and would love to try as it's got the triple coil pickup, the EDC710. I imagine it sounds like the ATK?
