What is your biggest "bass mistake"?

Examples of bass mistakes:

Selling a great bass that you never saw again
Trying to mod a bass but you made a horrible mistake
Paying a lot for a bass that you hated

As for me, my biggest mistake was when I' d only been playing for 3 months when I bought my second P bass copy. I loved it, I played it for hours. Sadly, I gave it away to an experienced player, because I thought it was broken (the action was too low). I still regret it to this day. Oh well. What was your biggest mistake bass-wise.

1) Selling a great bass that you never saw again - CHECK! I do miss my Celinder J-Update 5 occasionally.

2) Trying to mod a bass but you made a horrible mistake - CHECK! Link...
3) Paying a lot for a bass that you hated - CHECK! Many times, but luckily I have always been able to pass them on without taking too much of a loss.

But even though, I have made all of the above mistakes, I regret nothing :-) I live in Europe, and the bass prices are much higher than in the US, so I bought most of my 'mistake' basses from the US and were able to sell them again with little or no loss, and I have really enjoyed being able to try out sooo many different basses. And best of all, though there were mistakes, I have also found a lot of great basses that I will never sell, but play and enjoy!

As for the Celinder. Yes, I regret selling that one a bit, but then again I needed to do it in order to be able to try out an Alleva Coppolo, and I am sure that I will find another Celinder one day ;-)

Bought a gorgeous new, semi-custom MM Stingray5 back in '98(for around $1400). Loaned it to a neighbor "friend" of mine to be used for a coupla weeks. After a month passed, i asked for my bass back. My "friend" told me it was in Hollywood for some "studio" work. I was okay with that. A couple more months go by, so i head over to "Dave's" house to demand he return my bass. "Uh, sorry brah, Dave moved back east LAST WEEK". Needless to say, i never saw the bass again.

I have modified one of my basses, my Boogie Bodies PB which I added a surface mount bridge pup and drilled out the anodized aluminum guard for additional pots, leaving extra holes in both the guard and body, but at least I didn't rout the thing out, which I had considered!

Worst purchase mistake though was passing on a '58 Les Paul gold top back in the late '70s that I could have picked up for $800......it seemed like a lot of money at the time...oh well.

What specifically did you lose, if you don't mind my asking?

My biggest bass mistake is any time I have no choice but to sell a bass for less than what I payed for it but it doesn't keep me up at night. I know that the value lost was gained back in owning and playing it, so I just shrug it off. The guys who only buy a bass knowing they can flip it for a profit are better businessmen than they are bass players.

I always loved the look of the older Tobias basses, so I ended up trading a beautiful Fender American Deluxe Jazz FMT w/ a Sadowsky preamp installed for a older Pedulla made Tobias Model T. The Tobias was a nice bass, but ended up just not my cup of tea.

Well seems there is no market for these older Tobias basses. Could not sell it, no store wanted to touch it for a trade in. Had zero interest in it. Well finally sold it....but took a bath on it, big lost on that one! Live and learn!
