What is your studio bass?

Anything with a passive P bass pickup, preferably with flats.

I was using my Valenti J5 for everything but now I've got a USA Peavey Cirrus 6'er that has the most amazing B string and I've used that on the last 4 songs I did. Sounded great for that type of music. I'm getting my Elrick 5'er out of the shop from being refretted so I may use that on an upcoming CD I'm doing. I also have a Fender Jazz just in case.

Conklin Groove Tools 5-string with USA Barts and an OBP-3. Hate to admit it, but tonally I strongly prefer it over the three custom Conklins I've owned.

I've also used my SX Jazz for some stuff. Records fantastically.

Hmmm..Almost. I use a '68 Precision with Pressurewound and SD Quarter Pounder pups. For the other 1%, Fender V P-bass with Flats.

On "Liquid Chaos" (first release), all but track #8 is the notorious "Red Eye". It's P with a fretless Jazz neck, regular US pick-up and 9050ML's. Track #8 was the old 4001(better "bite").

OK. I had a Danelectro once. It was customised to a 5 string long before I bought it, with the extra string being above the G - not a low B but a high B! That circulated the globe on a hit single.
After a Gibson SB2 which let me down when I thought it could be better than the Dano, I bought a Rickenbacker 4001 in 1973 and I have used that for recording ever since (round wound Rotosound). I now have a Squier Affinity PB which was hardly used and was sold for £50 GB. This has flats on it and I have just adjusted the bridge saddles.
I miss the Danelectro though so I may get a normal 4 string later this year for all-purpose use. The Affinity bass matches the Affinity Strat that arrived here in 2008.

I named it Tonehenge. The speakers are 4 x 15" 421 8H Altec bass speakers. The amp is a 200w rms custom built amp for stereo bass.

I wish I could say Rickenbacker 1973 4001, but I can't because I don't have $1,500-$3,000 to spend :/. But I got a 51 P bass reissue, so i dont mind my problems lol.

I typically use my A.Tsai 7 string....believe it or not. I do a lot of midi and sampling work...and having the range plus a really versatile (yet unnamed) pre amp has been invaluable.

However...i havent put my new (to me) custom Bart/Duncan equipped J bass to the test yet...

For me...

I want my studio bass to be the same as my performance bass. I want the same sound live that I have in the studio. That makes my purchase$$$ more for my live bass because it needs to be great in the studio as well...

I did the last album with the Yamaha TRB5. It just got a set of new strings when we went into the studio. No fiddling...nuthin.
