what do you call the silver cover thingy that are sometimes found on basses covering the pickup they are some rickenbackers and old p-basses..

and is there any point other then look too have one?

Pickup cover seem like a very accurate descriptor so I don't see a reason there would be another.

I play over the pup and anchor my thumb on the edge of it so the covers get directly in the way.

I actually prefer them on P basses. They give my thumb something to rest on when I play closer to the bridge (which I prefer to do).

They severely limit your ability to play. If you can get comfortable working around them, then fine. Otherwise they just get in your way -- and occasionally take a little skin.

I have an older (Made In Japan) Squier P in sunburst. I installed an anodized gold pickguard, and pickup / bridge covers. Looks killer!

Apparently most people love the aesthetic, you're not the only one.

Personally, though, I absolutely cannot stand the way they look.
Also, they hinder your playing, and they don't serve any purpose except hiding foam mutes on old Js.

If you play closer to the middle, which I do, the bridge pickup cover by itself won't bother you at all.
