What kind of distortion do you use?

My latest tone bone came from running my SansAmp through a Tech21 GT2. The GT2 is ridiculously versatile even though a lot of the sounds aren't great for bass it's fun to play with; you can lose a lot of bottom if you're not careful. It's straight up crunchy!

I have a Darkglass B3K running before either one of those of I'm feeling nasty.

I love the GT-2 on the "clean" and tweed setting. It gets some awesome chris squire esque grit.
 
I use a Boss DS-2 cascaded into an american big muff.
I run a separate wet and dry signal to keep the low end intact.
The DS-2 onit's own sucks for bass,and the big muff was just too dull/flat on its own.Combine the two and we have a winner!
