What kind of strings do you use?

Currently La Bella 760FL flats on a 62RI P Bass. With a mute. Very rich, thumpy, big and musical. Not very wiry or pokey. Just works.

I'm a personal fan of Rotosounds for roundwounds and DR Chromes for Flats. Both have good tones for what i do. I tried $5 bass strings once...just what the hell...felt like playing barbed wire...

Left D'addario Chromes, DR Lo-Rider nickel-plated are on.
I like the sound, but need to get used to them, because Valve Drive sounds little bit different than it use to with flats.

Dean Markley Blue Steels (platinum core), lites on the dean, yamaha and P, Love the bright tone, with lots of low growl, but they will chew up your fingers if not calused (I work construction, so very tough skin) I slap alot as well as pick and use fingers. To get good tone out of the Blue Steels, you have to hit em hard. Rotos of unknown vintage on the 74 jazz, extra lites, will be switching to Blue steels at the next change. Ernieball Flatwounds on the fretless. (Being sold tomorrow). Fw's on the fretless because youll maul the fretboard if you use roundwounds. Hate the tone or rather lack of tone on em.
Unless you like really bright tone, or favor bright poppy highs, does it really matter on the strings. Always baffles the **** out of me when people spend thousands of dollars for a bright bass with lots of vibrant tone and then turn the highs down and play through a muddy sounding rig.

We are bass players. It's all about frequencies below 200Hz. All this use of Bright roundwound Strings & tweeters to "cut through the mix" is taking away from what the bass is supposed to do, which is: Lay down those low Frequencies for everything else to dance on.

I'd go for flatwounds for both P and J Basses.. i like the sound of a dead thud... but on StingRay I'd prefer Boomers or Nickel Slinkies

My Baltimore(p-style Pups) has D'Addario Chromes, and my Cort(straight P-copy) has Fender Nylon Tapewounds.

Are the Chromes that good? Just ordered 2 packs of Elixir, nanoweb coating for my 5 string. I hope they last as the other posts claim that they do. Im sick of the high Humidity in coastal cities, killed my pack of Ernie Balls in 3 weeks and also the Warwick Black Labels, the latter were damn rough on the fingers too and i managed to break 2 of them while at Jam.
It's difficult to get a good gauge pack here in Mumbai and shipping just makes sure your broke for the next couple of months.

Are the Chromes that good? ...Im sick of the high Humidity in coastal cities.

I have Chromes on my fretless Jazz and my Precision. I like the mellow thumpin' bottom end for those basses. I have R. Cocco Nickel rounds on my other basses for a brighter tone.

I dunno about humidity or India. I live in Arizona where humidity is about 5%. Stuff lasts forever here! I bought an Ibanez BTB455 a while back and it had Elixers. I get the idea, but I hated them. Felt like my bass was strung with five eels, from .45 to .125. They were gone in about 3 hours of sliding around the fretboard.

This time around learning bass I opted a set of Ernie Ball Slinkys(med.,nickle,roundwound) on my Squier P bass.Initially they were too bright for me but after 2 weeks or so they calmed down.Love both the sound and the feel of the EBs.



Also used to own a Danelectro Rumor bass that I strung with flatwounds(can`t remember the brand)just on a lark.It was definately different.Smoooooottthhhh.

DR Hi Beams on my 5 string Warwick Thumb. At 1st the B string always seems to rattle up at the nut, but then it goes away with some play time.

Since I started playing I mostly used the EB Regular Slinky Bass strings and D'Addario XL Nickels, but 4 months ago I picked up a set of Extra Slinky's and really like them, so much I got the 5er version for my 4 string P tuned C#standard for my metal band. Really good strings but really lost the zingy-ness after about 3 weeks and practices/shows. Yesterday I got some D'Addario Flats (Chromes 50-105) and my goodness just noodling around last night and this morning I've already become quite comfortable with them. The general consensus seems to be that flats help you stand out a little bit in the mix. Well, I'm gigging tonight with them so I'll see.
