What makes a bass sound thinner than another.

I've held basses in my hands, unplugged, and when I play them I can feel that they sound thinner, there is a certain low end vibration that they don't have. Especially really cheap basses.

I also find that when plugged in, such basses truly sound they way they feel unplugged. Because of this, I've already ruled out electronics and amps. I now believe it's got something to do with the wood.

I don't know much about this stuff. l've heard about resonant frequencies, I've heard about wood that was not completely dried. What could be the reason? Could it be string tension?

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

I should confess, I have two really cheap jazz bass clones. I was able to get one for myself about two years after I started to learn. The other one was a gift I received much later. I took out the frets on that one.

I've always thought that I would upgrade them, but I want to know if it's still worth doing if the wood is not great.

What I gathered from luthiers on this site: when designing a bass guitar, you balance how rigid is body-neck duo. Rigid instrument means all the string vibration gets picked up by pickups, making it sound bright. Less rigid constuction enhances some frequencies and gives it character. (This is simplified, obviously).
I guess, and I could be wrong: when you design and produce inexpencive instrument, it's safer to go for rigid instrument, slap "in your face bright and growly" pickups and call it a day.
 
I have/had basses that were thin sounding and others that were bass heavy but I always have been able to balance them all with the appropriate pickups and strings.

As for the so called "cheap basses", if the neck is straight, relatively stable and the truss rod is working fine, the rest is easily manageable to get the tone balance you want.
 
I am extremely skeptical that the wood or construction has a meaningful impact on the eq curve of an amplified bass and I have never seen any actual testing that shows this is the case. If anyone knows of actual tests and not anecdotes which suggests wood or construction matters, please point me in that direction.

I am extremely skeptical that the wood or construction has a meaningful impact on the eq curve of an amplified bass and I have never seen any actual testing that shows this is the case. If anyone knows of actual tests and not anecdotes which suggests wood or construction matters, please point me in that direction.

It will always be a matter of 'it's in the hands and ears of the beholder', but I can most definitely say that my StingRay sounds like a StingRay unplugged.... as does my Jazz Bass.... and my Lakland 44-02 Deluxe. My P-Bass with old, dark flats definitely sounds very different as well, unplugged. It sounds like a P-Bass with flats! i.e., the unplugged resonance and sonic quality of the bass DOES inform its amplified sound to some degree, in terms of nuance. The amplified tone will be a majority combo of the pickup and preamp coloration for sure, but the acoustic property is most definitely present as well.
 
IME, wood and construction do have some impact on how a bass sounds.

I have had four Precision-style basses, and they all responded in a different way, also when unplugged. One was an Am Std Fender, maple/maple over alder. Quite heavy but not too heavy, a modern quite thin neck. Another was a Yamaha BB Billy Sheehan model, maple/rosewood over alder. Substantial weight and a *thick* neck. The third one a cheap Vintage by Wilkinson, maple/"rosewood" over "alder" (note the quotation marks). Lightweight and with a medium-thickness neck. The fourth one was an Orange O-Bass, which has the pickup slightly towards the neck (8mm, not much really). Maple/ebony over okoumé (similar to mahogany but sturdier, apparently). A very wide neck. I installed the same pickups (EMG GZR) in the Fender and the Vintage. The Orange had a Seymour Duncan SPB-1.

The Yamaha was quite bright and with pronounced mids around 300-400Hz. It sounded best with a bit of a bass boost and a slight mid cut. (If that inherent mid boost had been an octave lower, I would probably have been very happy). I'm talking about the split coil pickup alone, blending in the big neck pickup made it sound a bit closer to what I liked. It had a bit of a "stiff" character (not bad, but I wanted something rounder and with more bloom, especially pickstyle).

The Fender was very bright, with very pronounced upper mids. I needed to cut the high mids on my amp with this bass because otherwise it sounded a bit too clanky. The bass vibrated very little when I played it, compared to my other two Precision-styles. It had a very "precise" character (well, it's a Precision... :D ). I felt the bass sounded a bit too clinical for my tastes, no matter what strings I'd use. I didn't experiment too much with it because I sold it to buy another bass.

The Vintage by Wilkinson has an uncomfortable neck profile and it has a slightly smaller body than a regular Precision (but with large '70s style tuners). It has a little bit of a neck dive. It is my favourite so far :D it sounds the closest to what I want it to sound (by the way, I saw very little variation between the original Wilkinson pickup and the EMG). It is the bass that vibrates (physically) the most. It's less "precise" sounding than either of the former two, but it's the sweetest sounding nevertheless. Now with a set of DR Fat Beams.

The O-Bass... I couldn't get it to sound right with roundwounds. Like, at all. It sounded a bit hollow, thin. I first had very good impressions with Fender flats - the most "consistent" tone I've ever had out of a bass, if a bit unexciting. But it really started to shine with Pyramid flats. It was always a bit lean in the bass and it didn't really "fill" the mix, but it had this fantastic mid tone that was very nice both finger and pick style. I then sold it to a singer-songwriter I play with because I have too many basses :D

Now, pickup and pickup placement is key. Having a split coil (it doesn't really matter which, they all sound similar, especially if they use the same kind of magnets) exactly where it is (±8mm...) gives the bass that kind of timbre. But how that timbre actually translated into the mix was very different between the four basses. I have no idea why. Nevertheless, each bass actually sounded different unplugged (with the same strings, of course).

And these are all solid body basses. Hollow- or semi-hollowbodies are another thing altogether, even the ones with a centre block (the hollow wings do give them some je ne sais quoi).

One thing I have noticed: I don't seem to particularly care for heavy basses tone-wise. I used to have a Peavey T-40. It didn't sound particularly bad, but it had this prominent midrange honk (in any of the pickup configurations) that I had to dial out (and even then, it tended to sound a bit "cold"). I saw similar behaviour (both plugged and unplugged) between the Peavey and the American Fender, albeit more extreme in the Peavey.

My favourite bass to play? My completely hollow Chinese Höfner. It's crap and I love it.

(My experience as regards strings is that flats have much more variability than rounds. Roundwounds come in three types: nickel, steel and Rotosounds. Gauges scale similarly across brands. All the rest is made up of minor variations, string life, etc.).

As I understand, construction does have impact on tone. As for wood specifically, it is one of many factors that are part of construction, but it's wrong to generalize (tone-wood debate) because it all comes down to how bass is designed.
Something like buying sound drivers and presuming how they are going to reproduce sound; you have to look at whole cab design.

While readin your post here I caught myself agreeing, then wondering if I'd be able to pick out my own basses in a blind test...

When Les Paul was doing his experiments to figure out how to get the maximum frequency range and sustain out of an electric guitar, his Eureka moment came when he added a neck, a bridge, a pickup, and tuners to a section of an old railroad tie.

It sounded awful unamplified: thin and plinky. But through an amplifier, it had all the sustain and tone he'd hoped for.

Moral: other things equal, an unplugged bass that sounds deeper or louder than another unplugged bass might be resonating audibly, a.k.a. dissipating some of the energy of the strings that would otherwise be going into the pickups. You might prefer that sound, of course.

I think string tension could definitely be a factor, but also newer vs older strings for obvious reasons. I prefer high tension strings and have more hours unplugged than otherwise.

as a side note about tension, I can't believe how low tension some of the "acoustic bass" strings are. They literally twist with your finger (at least how I play). Considering how meaningless acoustic bass guitars are, I wonder if a strong neck and high tension strings could help with projection/definition.

It could be interesting for you watching this video by Jim Lill, YouTuber and professional working musician.
He did a bunch of videos about tone, sustain, amps and mics, all very interesting.

I thought so too but apparently his methods and conclusions are pretty polarizing from people in the business, and he pulled at least one video that got (apparently deservedly) roasted.

"Really cheap basses" tend to have equally cheap electronics and other parts that are built to that cheap price. I'm not getting into the "tonewood" argument with you or anyone else. That's fine for some but I'm not doing it. All I'm saying it keep the economic whole reality of the thing in mind FIRST.
