What software to slow music down when learning by playalong

Can YouTube change the pitch on the fly too? At band practice we often kick around song ideas, but we struggle to choose a good key until I can get home, DL a copy and play with the pitch.

Youtube doesn't change pitch, unfortunately. But there is an external footswitch controller that allows you to access the start/stop/slow/loop functionality that makes it super convenient when working on songs.

I use Transcribe! to slow down, change the pitch, and loop songs I am learning. You can also have it show its guess of what the notes are, which can be helpful.

I just started using Moises, which I can isolate the bass. I leave in the drums, guitar, and vocals at low volume to help keep track of where I am in the song.

Once I figure out the bassline, I will sometimes drop the YouTube link into Slowtube, where I can slow it down (if needed) but mostly as a quick means of looping the parts I want to work on.

i do the same thing Moises for a bass heavy mix ( the paid version has a smart metronome which is very helpful) everything else mixed low then import into transcribe!

I like transcribe because you can boost an octave without changing speed makes tough bass lines really stand out

Thank you - I checked this out but it's only for the desktop/laptop, not for the phone. I'll keep an eye on it in case that changes. I would love to be able to change pitch on YT on the fly on my phone while at band rehearsal.

LOVE MOISES. Though they just got the beatdown and can no longer allow for YouTube (and the like) URL uploads. No big deal. I d/l via another website, then upload, works great!

So what can I use either to slow down playback on the fly or to process & save a track at say 80% and 50% speed? I'm on a Mac. Oh and I mean the original song recording, not a MIDI file.

Reaper is free and does time (and pitch) shifting very well.
You just load your file, right click on the waveform, and item properties includes playback speed.

Agree… right on my phone, that way tunes are available in the car for added listening. Can loop and/or slow down just a section of a song, change pitch, great EQ control, intuitive folder/file controls,…. been using it for years.

Yes - and combining slowing down (without changing pitch) with looping helps figure out just about anything. Have learned some nasty licks that way.
