I'd recommend nickel rounds for now. Good default string until you've grown unsatisfied with their sound.

Rounds- Metal and funk. ONLY METAL AND FUNK
Flats- Everything else.
Grounds- Don't even pretend like anyone actually uses them.
Nylons- Just go buy a double bass.

This guys really gonna get confused when he learns theres many brands of each kind (round, flat) and that each has its own little tone thing going which makes it liked or not compared to another brands round or flat etc string. lol.

I just go for strings that get the tone I'm looking for at the time. I've been in a metal band playing flats on a fretless. I never think about the style of music I'm playing, I just go for the tone that sounds best to me. I have since moved on from playing metal and now look back wondering what the heck I was thinking lol.
