Child forums are for young people to talk about gear and learn basics just as in the "regular" adult forums.

Two examples from here on the "General Forums [BG]" side: both the "Hardware, Setup & Repair [BG]" and the "Luthier's Corner" have one child forum each - "Pro Bench" and "TB Builder's Showcase" respectively. I guess a search within one of the former without flagging the "child forum" box would not yield results from the latter.
