I've managed to save up around £500 to spend on a new bass, I have my heart set on a Fender Jazz (I already own a Squier Precision and just fancy something a little different) can anyone steer me in a good direction on what to get or look out for?

In the USA, yes. Sorry, I'm not familiar with the used market in your neck of the woods. Assuming there is an active Craigslist in your area I would start there.

Try the Modern Player Jazz. I think its in your price range if you want to buy new. Otherwise go used MIJ Fender.

I don't think Craig's list exists in the UK

The fact that you were unaware of Craig's List is significant. Relatively few Brits in general know about it. As you can tell by the number of posts, compared with major U.S. cities. Therefore it might not be as useful for you as had been indicated...

If you live on the mainland, I'd recommend a trip there, some great shops all in one street. Wunjo Guitars was great when I got there, and although lots of people say that Denmark Strt is overpriced, the prices aren't actually bad and the guy there was prepared to give me a damn good deal on a used MIA Strat when I went there, and was going to throw in a new 30W Fender amp in for nada

Over here Gumtree is a lot more popular than CL, which by comparison does not have a lot on offer.
