what to do with an "old" bass

Hey all,

I have an "old" Fender Squire 4-stringer that been sitting around for 10+ years. I think I got it around 1996 or so. I don't even know what model it is but its got PJ pickups. Any idea on what i should do with it?

pickups work but the pots don't really..... it definitely needs a setup but will setup do anything to a neck thats been in same position, not played, for long time?

Clean it, get it setup & play it.
OTOH, if you're hinting around as to *what it might be worth/should I sell it*, check the rules- you need to be a supprting member to do that.

I use my old basses for trying out new mod ideas and such. Re-finish it, put on new hardware, throw in a nice preamp, and play the beast...or at least keep it for backup.

Fix it up that's what you do. If all that's bad is the pots, then 250K pots are cheap to buy replacements anywhere, like $20 bucks.

Or you could sell it to me cheap. Ive been looking for something to slap a fretless neck on.

Yep... I made that mistake (once) . . . Not worth the embarrassment. .

Clean it up, put fresh strings on it, a quick set up and donate it. Maybe there's a school near you that could use it.

Or give it to a child in your family or street who may be interested in learning an istrument.

Or put it up for sale here on TB.

Or experiment on it.

Possibilities are endless!

give the truss rod a tweak - it should be good to go. get some new strings - maybe experiment with stripping, paint job, relicing? anything you want to do!

I had an old one that wasn't getting played and I took on a fun project...converting it to fretless.. and doing an "unusual" kind of finish. ...and replaced with used tuners and new pots. all pretty easy stuff. Even made my own fretpuller pliers. total cost was really low and it gets played now!

Donate it, to a school music program, a church, a community center, anyplace where it might be a blessing to a kid who can pick it up.

Always nice to have a toy you can really play with, and not worry too much about. I recently re-acquired my 30 year old J-Bass copy, well used, and semi-working... I'm still figuring just how much fun to have with it...

Fixing it up and donating it is a fantastic idea. I think I might just re-build my old Squier and donate it to my old highschool. I usually send them a $200 check every spring semester for the jazz band program, but that would surely be much cooler.

Get it fixed up and sell it to someone who is just starting out on bass guitar. Or use it as a testing ground for mods if your into that kind of thing.
