What was your first amp (old guys only)

LOL! My first real bass amp was also a Gibson Thor 2x10. Prior to that, I had been using a Jordan keyboard amp that my younger brother had.

Sign me up for the Gibson Thor club too! Should we have numbers?

In 1977 I did get a FAL-Kestrel "Combo" for my 16th birthday. It was 120 cm high, full-transistor-amp, I think 150 watt and 1x15'' - speaker. Awful sound!

As I see todays combos, amps, cabs - and prices(!) I grow jelaous for the kids that start today! We had to take a huge ammount of money to get a bass guitar, and there was nothing else than Fender, Rickenbecker, Framus and Gibson. No cheap Squiers, no Epiphone, not a single "kickstart" - set. The same was with them amps.

My real first amp was a modyfied tube - radio. The sound was awesome, but the wattage was poor - and the speaker was ripped to pieces in no time. Later we played with two guitars and a bass over that poor little Vox AC 30. What can I say, I was happy about that FAL Kestrel.

Gibson Thor with 2x10 speakers-40 watts of tube power. Later upgraded to a stack of 2 Fender Bassmans with 2 cabinets (2x12) and a Standel with a single 15. Ironically, my loud rig these days is an Eden WT-600 with 2 cabinets with .....2x10 speakers.

in 1966 my mom used a weeks pay to buy me a Sears Silvertone bass and amp the matched used $75.00, the amr was35 watts with a 12in speaker

Mine was a Bassman prototype that I found in a pawn shop in Oakland. It was a late sixties with the solid state type metal front but with a 100 watt 4x6L6 tube chassis. I used to get the bejesus shocked out of me every time a touched any other amp or a microphone.

Had an old blackface bassman (which my dad bought new) with a loose transformer that did that. Great fun. Electrifying, in fact. Not my first amp, though. That would have been a wollensak tube reel to reel deck with a diy extension cab my dad made me, ca. '76 or so. There was also a Heath Kit SS my grandfather built.

My own first amp was a Kay guitar amp with a 10" speaker, around 1965. I was 15. I forget the model number. No pics, but I remember it had a brown grill cloth. Not too bad, really. But, I didn't have it long before I got a better amp a few months later in 1966, a Silvertone Twin Twelve guitar amp. That thing kicks. I still have it.

First bass and amp were from Montgomery Wards. The amp was actually made by Marlboro. My brother played guitar and we both had to plug into it. About a year later I got a Fender bassman 10 combo for a graduation present and that summer I bought A Fender precision.

The VOX Combo with the cart was an ESSEX. I had one to play my snazzy "Dave Clark 5: Continental organ through. I've b een playing keys throuigh bass amps ever since. Keyboard amps can't take the abuse adn tehy sound too "pretty." That ESSEX was a great amo for the period.

I still have my second amp too. It is a Carvin from 1976.

I built my first amp by modifying a 1930's console radio with a 15 inch speaker. It was loud and sounded great. The radio cabinet was a work of art. My first store bought amp was a Silvertone from Sears that I bought right after seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan.
