Double Bass What's a good bass magazine?

Hey guys,

I've tried searching the forums, but so far don't seem to be able to find any.

I wanna subscribe to a good bass magazine, and I was wondering if you guys have any recommendations?

Personally, I would want the magazine to focus mainly on all things classical, as I am not a electric bass player.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

We used to have a great magazine in Double Bassist, which unfortunately stopped publishing a few years ago. If you can find the back issues, it's very much worth reading. Double Bassist was owned by The Strad, which incorporated bass-related articles into its own issues after Double Bassist went under. You could subscribe to The Strad, but it's an expensive subscription for not very much double bass content.

The ISB also publishes a magazine for its members called Bass World. To subscribe, you just have to join the ISB on [Invalid or Expired Link Removed].

Hey Paul,

Thanks for the reply. I don't think I could get my hands on older copies, though I'd try to.

Just checked the link out, and I'm not really digging the 3 issues a year thing. I was expecting monthly!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Double Bassist probably cancelled due to low subscription rates, which makes me feel sad :(

I just wished that there was moooooore bass content!

One thing you can say in defense of the Strad is that, as a classical musician you can learn from any string player. Double bass is, as much as we like to fight with it, a member of the string instrument family and everything that they can do, we can do too. All of the articles are things you can use, and have things you can take away from and apply. also, basses and bassists are starting to pop up more and more often in both The Strad and Strings Magazine (another good classical magazine. they had a 2 page article on some rabbath stuff last month, as well as Bass bow buying and bass commissioning tips).

That said, I agree that there isn't much anymore that really focuses on DB directly. There's usually one or articles on DB in Bass Player Magazine (usually jazz stuff, and while not classical, very informative with guys like Avishai Cohen), and the occasional DB atricle in The Strad and Strings.

So, long answer made short, there's not really one magazine that will service your needs. But, and that's a big but, if you do some looking on the Magazine rack you can usually find something worth reading.
