whats deal about compression?

im gonna sound so stupid....but what is compression? what does it actuly do to your signal? because from all the deoms ive heard it sounds almost the same. why are they so expensive? what situations would you use compression? (eg funk you use envelope filters) and is the boss limiter/enhancer a compressor?

It's like balancing the crankshaft and camshafts, and improving the airflow of the manifold of a car engine.
You got to be an obsessed gearhead to know why it makes a difference and have lenghty discussions with other gearheads about it. :)

there are just TOO many applications. for example, i don't want a self-oscillating delay or a phaser/flanger to kill the speakers and/or the audience. or if i want to do a slap/pop riff without killing the speakers and/or the audience. as an effect, you use it for specific purposes. it's not an effect u use not knowing what it does, switch it on and go into effected bass wankery. it is also used as a sort of tone alteration per se which is a use which is often criticised by those who don't realise the former use.
