Whats that effect?

Hey what is that effect I've heard some guitarists use on chords that sounds like a symphonic orchestra when they hit a chord. I saw one from a distance once but could not tell what it was except it was NOT any sort of Mooger or ring mod (Moog or otherwise). Any ideas. Am wondering how it would sound as background in a looper.

like a volume swell? do you have any examples? a volume pedal might be what your looking for, maybe a POG or an eBow or whatveer its called

What band was it?

It depends on how you're using a looper and if you band plays to a click. Sending a loop to a PA or to it's own head/cab works a little better, as you're not muddying up the loop or your basslines overtop of one another.

Sounds like a harmonizer on the 12-string.

I saw a guy use one live on his Strat but all I could see was a gray box about 2x size of regular Boss-type pedal.

U2's The Edge uses this effect - "shimmer," which is a pitch shifted delay fed into a heavy reverb. You can hear it on "With or without you," and "all I want is you," especially the live versions. While he uses expensive Eventide gear for this sound, you can get decent effect with the Octo setting on a Line 6 Verbzilla...

HOWEVER - I did own one, but it never quite sounded good on bass.
