The question is really: how young is too young to play metal? After all, should kids be playing their parents music, or coming up with their own thing?

My favourite music is 80's metal, motown & the beatles. All of which would be classified as my parents music. So i should stop listerning to this & listern to what then?

I think that metal fans may be the most forgiving about age. It seems that people who grow up listening to metal usually always continue to do so as they get older. You could probably go to a Black Sabbath concert (in 2013) as see fans from ages 7-70. That being said, I think one would have to realistic in their expectations. You could be 40 years old and start a metal band with some of your peers that could be a lot of fun, and locally successful with friends and others around the same age, but the chances of that band "making it" are much more unlikely than one that is 20 years younger.

Once you begin to resemble a bowling ball on color matching poles in your animal print unitard, it's time to think seriously about pulling a Bill Ward. Ditch your Gene Simmons sig model and multiple cab stack, pick up a Fender P and a Peavey combo along with some jeans, a casual coat with leather on the elbows, and a matching pork pie hat, and begin anew in Americana or blues.

I think one can view metal as a genre like classical music. Although it hasn't been around that long, the musicians who got into it when they were young are now old. It's going to become the new oldies. They'll be playing it in nursing homes in the future.
