what's the process for doing a DI live?

so far, i've only ever used an amp at live shows. i'm thinking of switching to only a DI box, but i really don't know what to bring to/do at a gig other than have my bass and box with me. can anyone give me a step-by-step?

It all depends on where you are, the sound person and the equipment they have. For shows where I don't take an amp I take my basses, effects, and active DI and cables to hook it all up and an xlr cable to hook up to their system or snake. Many places will already have a DI for you to use but just in case. Remember that you are at the will of the sound person so be friendly and cooperative. I do often have a small bass amp in the car in case the monitoring situation is not all the great.

1. Try plugging straight into the board. If it is more than 15-20 feet away then you should use a DI.

2. Plug your bass into the DI.

....2.1. If your DI is active, make sure the batteries are good.

....2.2. If it takes phantom power, make sure that the phantom power is on at the board.

3. Plug the DI into the board.

....3.1. EQ your tone for the mix

4. Make sure you get a decent monitor mix.
