What's the treble equivalent of mud?

I was at the Grizzly Rose last night for Thompson Square, and the bass sounded pretty good (by the third song). Openers were better in that respect than the headliners, but no wall-o-kick or undefined sludge.

But OMG THE TREBLE! I felt like I was being attacked my a dozen snares and cymbals at once. Still have ringing in my ears.

In the pre-concert struggle with the children, I forgot my earplugs. And I suspect some muffled power-tool earplug sound might have made the mix pretty much correct, which makes me wonder if the sound guys were wearing them.

Is there a word for that?

A couple more shows like that and I'll lose my treble hearing. Then it will sound perfect!

That is a fact. They only need to be a little deaf to HF to sizzle the hell out of the mix for the rest of us.

Btw I keep my earplugs on my keyring. If I lost those I got bigger problems than too much treble.

Many years ago when I was working in the consumer audio industry, I was talking with one of the Japanese engineers about a pair of tweeters we were listening too. I asked him what he thought of them. He replied that they were "sticky". "Sticky"? I asked? What does that mean? He said that they sounded like someone was sticking sharp needles into his ears.

I've since used the term "sticky" to describe harsh sounding highs.

I think I have to go with "sticky." Sounds like something one of my kids would say. (Last summer my youngest said of the bass at an outdoor concert, "I can hear it with my tummy.")
