i would like to play more, but i'm lucky to be in the situation i'm in with such outstanding musicians as bandmates (this project is in its 11th year!). i'm old, so i'm lucky to still be playing at all, right?! but i can keep up (and even guide). ;) we all want to be playing the right notes at the right time --- that's the goal, that's the plan, that's the satisfaction.

I do have a vision, but in my experience, if you have that, you'd best also have the following in your possession in order to implement it.

1. The practice place
2. The PA.
3. Be the main ramrod for gigs.
4. Be the lead vocalist.

None of which applies to me so I'm relegated to searching for a gig that is someone else's, but that I'm ok with.

I had to go with the limited options in my area one. Relatively small, mostly rural area. Not much of a music scene here, at least not in the kind of music I enjoy listening to and playing. I have found some people though with, if not similar, at least adjacent tastes. It's... Ok. The biggest challenge for us has been limited venues in the area for a rock band. There would be a lot more opportunity here if we played acoustic country/folk type music. I don't hate that type of music, but I definitely don't like it enough to spend my limited free time on it. Unless I decide to move (unlikely), it is what it is. Playing some enjoyable music occasionally is better than not playing at all.

"My" vision is a bit strong, but it's the closest of the options.

Serious gigging days behind me by choice. Currently in a trio garage band with me on bass or keys, the missuz on drums, and a pal on guitar (I've been teaching him to play). We're sorta two bands: a rock band (when I'm mostly on bass, a couple of tunes with keys and left-hand bass) and a blues band (when I'm on keys exclusively).

We get together to play on Saturdays, sometimes our pal will come over mid-week for a guitar lesson. We've played for friends a few times and have a few more parties and gatherings coming up.

I'm very lucky to be playing with like-minded musicians... very detail oriented, too. I've known the drummer since 6th grade, and finally got the opportunity to play alongside him, so that in itself is huge. Our keyboardist and I have come full circle, having played together in a band, almost 40 years ago. Our guitarist is great, and we recently accepted a really great singer/frontman, who has a work ethic second to none.

I can't stop now... who knows what's around the corner, for us? You never know, right?

I'm right where I want to be. One band is a Tex-Mex outfit. Lots of Cumbias, Rancho's, traditional Mexican music. Lots of 70's Chicano music like El Chicano, Malo, Santana and then lots of 50's 60's rock n roll. Up front bass and so groovy. Great players and a pro band all around. Gigs with lowrider car clubs/car shows and Mexican weddings and parties. The food is fantastic! Then my other band is a 3-piece blues band. Old time blues like John Lee Hooker stuff. Really raw and raunchy blues. No polished stuff. I couldn't ask for more. Then I got a buddy who I've been recording music with for 30 years and we get into our studios and write some weird things. very personal and creative stuff. I'm satisfied.

@Hot Rats - I just quit a band that played same material! Good bunch of people, lots of the same kinda gigs, but having played with them for 10 years, I found that I could only play Suavecito so many times. I'm now filling in for all the other bands in my area that also play that same material.

Hahahaha, Suavecito. No doubt. I've played a hundred times but still enjoy it 😁

I was away from bands over 20 years, then last year reconnected with an old friend who had spent the pandemic recording at home, looking to make a band of it. Now we have a 5 piece with 2 good songwriters and singers and we’re playing shows about once a month. It started out more Americana than I would have picked myself, but still really fun and getting weirder and more interesting all the time. I’m having a ball.
