Had two gigs in two different venues with two different bands this weekend, with two different (but weirdly similar) backlined rigs— and very different results.
Friday night’s show was a 6pc rock and roll band in a medium-sized bar. I was a little skeptical when the other band’s bassist provided a LMTube with a single matching Traveler 210, but it sounded great- firm and even and clear. Maybe the PA support had something to do with it but I really, really enjoyed the rig.
Saturday night’s trio show was in a big room with a big PA. I walked into the venue and saw a LMTube 800 sitting atop a black Markbass 410. After Friday night’s experience, I was excited to play through it. This time, though, the low end was muddy, the lowest notes on my bass (only down to Eb) seemed to disappear, and the whole setup seemed to struggle even at a moderate PA-supported volume. Bigger cab, huge disappointment. I ended up turning on my “fix-it” preamp to tighten up the sound.
Maybe I was missing the ground coupling, since Saturdays amp was propped up on another unused cabinet. Maybe it was the differing quality of the cabs. Maybe something was wrong with Saturday’s amp. Either way, I was shocked that the same bass, pedal setup, and basically same amp sounded so drastically different.
Pic of Saturday’s shared amp with the other bassist’s settings (I flattened it out considerably from here):
