Let me set the scene for you,

You're in front of a large crowd all coming to see your band. You pick up your axe and you set your dials on your amp. Opening riff, what kind of sound do you make and how do you play? What's your style? What's your sound?


I'll humbly start off. My bass is my bongo five running currently though my Yorkville 400B and a 115. My eq is a frown boosting my mids. I have yet to find a effects pedal I like so I run clean. My eq on my bass is set as [do a 1-10 scale for it] bass-10, low mids-4, high mids-6, treble(does anyone get what that really is?)-5 with the piezo set to about 7 to pick up some of the brilliance of the DR lowrider strings I got on it. The eq changes with the song but this is the main set up. Of course, played with fingers. I like to provide a melodic line wherever possible if need be and I don't really like to stick to the root notes unless I absolutely have to.

Im basically a rock bass player, but i can play some funk, reggae and brazilian music. As for the style, i play simple and comitted to the groove. Sometimes i can make some turnarounds, or even some melodic short solos.
I play mostly with my fingers, agressive, 1 finger techinique (like my mentor Geddy Lee), but also with a pick, when the song needs. Or with classic 2 fingers pizzicato. Im a very good slap player, but use it only for some fx. No tapping, double pluck, etc.
I do not read, but can follow any music by ear; Im play since 15 years old, and am 40 years old know, so i have a very good musical perception.
My tone is fat, compressed with some boost on 500/600 hz.
i use a Hartle A100 =, 15" speraker and a Zoom B2. Also use a Chorus, Octave, Loop pedal, Volume pedal, Tuner (boss), American Bass Balls, Ibanez TS9 DX.
These days im stuck to chromes for strings. My basic axes are:
Fender Jazz Bass Geddy Lee, with chromes 045/100 and SD SJ5 PUs.
Fender Precision RI 57 (the red one), with chromes 045/100.
Musicman Sterling 95, chromes 040/100.
Rickenbacker 4001S 77 - daddario XL 040/095.

I fear this is one of those threads that's more for the benefit of the poster than those reading, but I'll take a shot anyhow.

For me, it depends on the band

In my rock band I dig in hard with a pick and a ton of punch, very loud, and very aggressive trying to create the underlying excitement and intensity for the rest of the band. This sound relies heavily on my P-bass through an Acoustic 370 head and a mixture of 15s and 10s. My EQ is set with a pretty good mid bump.


In my more experimental group I'm a multi-instrumentalist and I'm all about spacing and tension. How long can one note or theme sustain a person's interest? How far can I stretch the song without breaking it? What's the line between playing a piece of music and just making noise, and how well can I bring a person back and forth over that line without them noticing? In this context my heroes range from Phillip Glass and Brian Eno to Merzbow, Sunn O))), and Sigur Ros.

In a rock setting, I usually play with a lot of Treble but enough bass to compensate as well, decent mids. This also applies for slapping and whatnot, but when it's rock I try to get more of a slightly distorted sound. Not really a distortion effect, but kind of like a Geddy Lee style distorted tone.

In a jazzier setting, depending on the song I'll either go for a nice, mellow sound, or a more Jaco-esque sound.

Style: Speed Metal

Gear: custom handmade Moser Custom Shop Arachnid Ultra with DiMarzio X2N-B pickup into 1973 or 1974 Marshall Super Bass head out to Marshall JCM800 Bass Series 4x12 and 2x15 cabs. The sound is loud and very "growly"! :bassist:

I set up me Ampeg V4BH on top of the NV610 or NV215 Plug my EBMM stingray5 or Fender Jazz in, thru my pedalboard > PT-1 tuner>Wilson Q-wah>EHX BMS>Badder Monkey> (sometimes a VTBASS also)> amp & plow into Chic's Good times riff or some other funk. Depending W Jazz/blues band- HICH band I'm doing. EUB/JAZZ>VTBASS> LMII>GS112>GS115 for that band Then we'll do a Nina Simone No.

Im playing a Stingray HH, with an Boss ODB-3 Bass Overdrive into my Orange AD200B head that goes to a SVT-810E 8x10 cabinet.

Turn up the overdrive, turn up the volume, fetch my pick from the pocket and start to go nuts on stage!
Im everywere, my sounds sticks out like a guitar-solo when it's alone, but with the guitar it plays really well!
Fast up and down, high and low notes, heavy breakdowns and most of all, Its so damn chaotic that you belive that hell is on earth.

The eq is:
Bass - 3/10
Low Mid - 5/10
Mid - 6/10
High Mid - 5/10
Treble - 6/10

My bass is full on volume and 0 on everything else.

I play reggae.

I'll play my Steinberger Spirit (Neck Pickup Only for now, haven't decided if I want to use an bridge pickup), or I'll play my Squier P-Bass. Both are on Labella Flats.

As for EQ, can't remember the exact numbers, but bass up, mids and highs lower, don't like treble. Basses full on volume. Laid back and groove it, I'll step to the riddim guitar or the bass drum kick.
