When Do You Think You Are Overplaying?

In every band with which I have played,

I am starting to suspect. as a guitarist who took up the bass recently, that I might be over playing. I went to watch a fairly big and popular band, Metric, last night and paid attention to what the bassist is doing. I noticed, even a band like that and they have some pretty busy songs, the bass player seems to play very simple parts quite often in very busy places.

For those who are much more experienced players on here, what are usually some things you pickup on that makes you think you are over playing to playing too many notes in a section and you realize you should be dumbing it down or making it simpler?

IME, it is the job of the bassist to be a trustworthy bridge between harmony and rhythm.
I have been told by several band mates over the decades that they like bassists who make it easier to follow the song form.
I see it as part of my responsibility to shine a flashlight on the song's path to help prevent my bandmates from getting lost, and to make it easier for them to hear where the song is going.
Overplaying is usually a symptom of failure to listen well and to anticipate the needs of bandmates.
