When is the honeymoon over?

One of these days you too will stray. You will see some hot exotic little number hanging out in a store. Maybe it's the graphite of her neck, maybe it's the flame in her grain. Her perfect pickups with the little pole pieces showing through....(whatever your personal fetish is) The temptation will be too much, you will take her down, gently finger her. Then in your excitement, you will madly search for a cable and plug her in and cause her to moan and sing and grunt while you slap her wildly in your passionate fury.

Then you will take one look at the price tag and hang that thing up and walk out the store slightly ashamed of your unfaithfulness and sad knowing things will never be the same again at home.

You mean the honeymoon ends? Been playing 30+ years and always find something to keep playing interesting, from initial purchase to modding/repairing to experimenting with various amps/effects/strings, to learning new music/technique, to re-discovering older music...the list goes on and on. And if I really hit a brick wall there's always guitar :)

From my point of view, it never ends. The reason being that I know in the first five minutes if an instrument speaks to me. Furthermore, that is unplugged. (I test all basses unplugged first). I have more basses than I care to admit to my wife and they all get played. A couple I've had for over 30 years.
That's how how I binstrument I check it out acoustically and at the time it always seems like the right one, but after a while I seem to change my tastes and want something different.

I was referring to one particular bass not music or playing in general.. I have been involved with music a very long time myself, and have had numerous instruments. Very few inspire me like this one does.

I recently picked up one of the new Fender American vintage instruments approximately a month ago. I love this instrument even more than the day I got it! it's absolutely perfect for me, and I think I found a special one as it completely inspires me. How long would you consider a new instrument purchase to be in the honeymoon phase? A week, month, year? Right now I can't see myself ever getting tired of this bass.

I thought bass players were naturally polygamous! with basses, that is!

Actually disrupted my sleep pattern the first two weeks I had it. I was staying up till 4 o'clock in the morning playing it, and I just didn't want to put it down. :bassist: ( I live in a house with musicians, and my room is very well insulated so I could play at lower levels without disturbing anyone. I love the feel and sound of this bass so much it just inspires me to play!

The Honeymoon is never over if you have the right instrument. When I got the bass I play now, I had a total of 6 basses. Since then I've sold off everything except for one other bass I have sentimental attachment to (and haven't played in over 15 years!). I have no need of others.

I too would just enjoy playing it until that time comes when there is some reason you do not enjoy playing it as much. Some artists still use their original first instruments from 20+ years ago.
