When space is the issue

Hi Talk Bass forum !

My name is Mauricio Moldes and I am writing from sunny Barcelona.
Currently I am living in a 35m2 house in the Barceloneta, that does not allow me to have a bass amp, both for noise and lack of space.

I would like to request your advice on a (small) (cheap) (used) piece of equipment that allows me to play through headphones, with a tuner, line in, a couple of times per week, just for fun with my active Ibanez bass. I would like this piece of equipment can be re-used in the future, in a live situation for example.

Thank you in advance,
Mauricio Moldes

I believe many good Class D heads have all the features you're looking for for home use (though you might need to buy a tuner of sorts separately), and just add a cab (speakers to go under the head) to use for live use. Although some modern combo amps (head and speakers are one non detachable unit) will also have the features you're needing at home, with the ability for the headphones to override the sounds coming out of the speaker to keep your practice quiet.

Not sure which brands are readily available in your part of the world, but buying used will get you a lot more bang for your buck.

For home use / Headphone use, I plug into a Focus right Audio Interface. Mine has got 2 channels that means I can line out stereo lines from my reverb / ambience Eventide H9. However, I also have a very sweet Phil Jones BG-100 bass amp that is suprisingly loud for a tiny micro combo. It can handle a low B with ease and it's got a dedicated headphone out, line out, line in and DI. Plus it's also got a 2nd pre amp channel for a guitar / mic etc. It's also the size of a shoe box.

Got you right here, OP:

I have a couple of these that I use when I'm in hotel rooms or staying with family, and I've had great results with them. I've also used them on-stage for IEM amps.

The vendor I linked above is in the US, don't know if they ship internationally, and even if they did what the cost to ship to Barcelona may look like. Brand-new these units go for about 85 USD in the US, you might be better-off looking for a local vendor.

Computer + interface + your amp/effect modeler of choice + headphones will likely be the most versatile and cheapest path.

The alternative is to buy a pre-amp+DI box and go to your interface from that. Or some preamps have their own integrated headphone amplifiers. This option will be easier to take to a live situation in the future.

I'm in a similar situation, living in a studio apartment in a metro area and having to play my active Ibanez guitars and basses silently. I still use Guitar Rig 2 on an old laptop, both I got in 2004, and they produce every single sound I need. I'm also in the process of building an analog board with a Tech 21 VT Bass DI and Darkglass X7 among other things. Both of those can go DI, and I intend to use that board for my live playing when the world goes back to a sane state.

I have one of these and love it for headphone practice or quieter living room practice.
