... do you try to figure out the chord progression first? To start off, I have a bad ear. I'm trying to work on this with ear training at the keyboard, playing intervals and chords of different qualities in all 12 keys etc. Is it worth waiting until I can discern what chords are happening, or jump straight into the bass line?
I ask because I have been playing bass for maybe 7 years now but playing mainly rock n roll and putting little to no thought or effort into improving. I've been listening to jazz my whole life, but only in the last year or so really considered wanting to play the music. I know I need a teacher, and had a good one last year. The progress I made was encouraging, but I'm a student and couldn't keep going every week. Perhaps lessons every 2 weeks would be a good idea? I really want to improve, and I know having a teacher helps hugely, but for my own self-directed studies, in regards to transcription, how do you go about doing it? Do you find it necessary to figure out the chords first, or figure out the chords from the bass line, or some other method?
Just for the record, it's bass guitar that I'm playing, but as it is playing jazz that I am trying to work towards, and transcription is such a huge part of that endeavour, I thought I would ask here. I know responses are fewer and farther between, but they tend to be more helpful than on the pork chop side.
