Where to buy a lined fretless???

To the OP, I'm not sure where you got the idea that Rondo only has 30" scale fretless basses. They have a fretless P for $109

I dunno if I'd recommend a short scale for the first fretless. Usually good to stick with a bass that has a similar feel to an existing bass in the arsenal. The margin of error is a bit smaller on a shorty, although there is some wiggle room when you factor in the rolled off high end.

Indeed, I'm just sayin' there's nothin' wrong with lines, my main fretless is unlined, as it happens.

I also might have taken a little offense when that guy said that your not dedicated if you use lines.

There really is a long list of reat players using either way, whichever suits a particular person shouldn't be cause for them to be looked down upon.

I took some lessons with Michael. His fretless basses all have side dots and/or lines, and he emphasized the importance of using my eyes as well as my ears in our lessons together. He told me he finds the visual reference invaluable when playing live.

I never said that if you have lines on your board, you're not dedicated.

What I said was that, in my personal opinion, lines give the appearance to other people that you aren't committed to playing a fretless instrument. If you want to take offense at something that really only affects me, that's your business. I still recommend that you use your ears more than your eyes to play fretless, and get a board without lines.

As far as Jaco is concerned, it may surprise some people to discover that not every fretless bassist idolizes Pastorius. Even a brief examination of his life and his lifestyle leads one to the conclusion that he may have had other things on his mind besides his instrument, so I have no difficulty believing he liked his epoxy-filled lines, at times.

Meh, sides........I prefer trying to keep things a little more factual than opinionated. The general assumption is that lines make a fretless easier and unlined basses are difficult. Everyone will react differently. I simply find lines confusing, which isn't to say that someone will think the same thing about an unlined fretless.

ive decided to get BOTH an unined and lined and decide for myself - so my question STILL remains!!!
WHERE CAN I GET An UNLINED AND LINED 34" scale that will fit my squier p pocket for under $1--

The one I recommended is not a short scale. It's a full 34".

If you only want the neck Rondo carries them occasionally, but some place like Warmoth is probably your best bet.

Apologies, I completely missed your post on the 2nd page about side dots, muscle memory, upright bass, etc... so I took your Jaco/Manring post out of context. Based on your other posts, I think you and I agree philosophically in our fretless playing.

Personally, I've owned only lined fretlesses through the years, but on occasion, I've messed around on unlined (with side dots) and I really didn't feel like I was playing a different instrument or exercising a different skill set. Now, when I play upright (since I don't do it often enough to develop muscle memory) I have to use my ears entirely, so that (or a bass guitar with no lines/dots/markers) is what I consider to be the true definition of "unlined fretless" i.e. intonation without visual reference point. So I guess my definition was more of a "player" definition (i.e. Jaco was a lined fretless player) than a "bass" definition (i.e. this bass has an unlined fretless fingerboard).

I guess really my point was directed at the OP: don't feel bad about playing "lined fretless" because 99.99% of the people telling you to play "unlined fretless" have lines or dots on the side of their necks that serve the same purpose.

If you are patient, I'm sure the neck you're looking for will come back around on Rondo again. Their stock rotates a lot and items sell out quickly.

Generally speaking, $100 is a very low budget for a replacement neck. Warmoth necks, for example, range from about $175 (unfinished) to $500 and up. That is why I recommended an entire new SX bass for $109--think of it as a $109 fretless neck that happens to come with a spare body, pickup, bridge, tuners, etc.
