Which Amp?

My first post on this forum. I have done a fair amount of reading over the past month or so - thanks to all for your generous knowlege. I've got $500 to spend on an amp that will meet my needs for the next few years. I play classic rock and blues primarily in small to medium rooms. This amp will be my one and only - used for practice, rehearsal and the occasional gig. I have negotiated a $500 price at GC for a G&K Backline 600 with G&K Goldline 210 cab. Is this the best use of my funds, or should I consider other equipment?

Please look at Ashdown Mag 300 before you pull the trigger on the G&K. I own one as does psychotiger. 2x 10's and we play the same small to medium rooms as you. It's lush and it's warm and it grinds and growls. Give it some thought.

The Backline 600 head is a good choice. I don't know about the speaker cabinet though. The Goldline isn't the best cabinet GK has to offer. I'd go for an Avatar 2x12 or 4x10 Neo instead. Get either of them in 4 ohms and you'll have a plenty loud enough rig that sounds good and is reliable. Your choice between a 2x12 or 4x10.

I'll check out the Ashdown Mag - I've heard lot's of good things about it.

What about the Avatar 210? Since I'm going to be moving this rig around a fair bit, I'd like to hold the weight down as much as possible.

I'd say check for an Ampeg B100R. I used mine for 2-3 years playing small clubs/bars (capacity of 100-200) without any problems. You can get them new for (guessing, been a long time since I checked) $350 and can find them used for a good deal, say $250 or so. I'm a blues/classic rock player myself, and it did the job nicely for me. Tight, compact punch w/o being boomy or "vague" sounding.
