Hi, just starting out with bass and would like to hear your ideas on what is the best amp for home/small venue. I have absolutely no idea which one to get...........

WHICH BASS AMP

I would buy something used. I like to scour the local craigs and typically see lots of great things in there. Like the Ampeg BA combos in the 1x15 and 2x10 configurations, or the B100R.
GK amps and cabs are great workhorses too and usually plentiful.

Thanx for the reply. I have been looking as you suggest but the choice is huge. I'll keep looking for a while, don't want to rush it and buy something on a whim..........

Maybe find a few you like in your price range and search the threads for reviews. Look up the price new online and shoot for 1/2 off that. Ampeg, Genz, and GK are solid and should be fairly inexpensive.
The Ampeg BA series are nice combos. The new GK MB series combos have the chain out option so you can add a second powered cab in the future if you need more headroom/volume. Hi, i've just been looking at an Ampeg BA115 which is up for £200, on Gumtree. Described "as new", it looks ok and the reviews I have seen on Youtube , seem to indicate its a decent amp.
