Which Bass for Zeuhl?

Welcome to TalkBass!

I must admit I was unfamiliar with the genre. And all I did was check out a few Magma songs on Spotify.

That said, there was nothing incredibly distinctive about the bass tones on those songs. Anything out of the ordinary was effects.

So I think you can get pretty much whatever you are comfortable with and be fine.

I'd say probably 5 string just because I really like having the options it gives you. As for bass there are a lot of awesome choices and I don't really think there's a totally wrong answer. My favorites would be Warwick, Ibanez, Yamaha, LTD, Schecter. For models I'd look at any Warwick. Thumb, Corvette, Streamer. For Ibanez I really like the Soundgear line and almost anything in there is going to be great. Yamaha is almost anything as well. The attitude, bb, bbn lines are all awesome too. LTD look at the b5 or d5. For Schecter I like the stiletto and studio lines. Look up any of these if you haven't seen them and hopefully one of these inspire you.

Welcome to TalkBass.

If I remember correctly, Bernard Paganotti often used different kinds of active 5-string basses (I think a Warwick Thumb would do just fine), and Jannick Top is known to use almost exclusively a 4-string Jazz Bass tuned in fifths (C-G-D-A). If you don't want to go that route, I think a 5-string Jazz Bass would do just fine here too.

Look for the threads that talk about the band Magma and these two bass players, you will certainly find more information there.
