which bass is better for me?

me and my friends are in a scremo, hardcore, metal band. im deciding between a p bass or a j bass ive played both and like both i like the look and feel of the j bass more than the p bass
some of my favorite bassists play j basses(andy trick, matt kean, joshua woodward) i kinda have a epiphone p bass(it technicaly belongs to my friend) my dad said he'd either get me the squire j bass package or p bass package (dont make fun of me for gettin squire im on a really limited budget) so give me a suggestion opinion what you use what you play stuff like that

You're going to have lots of people telling you to try both and decide, which is really the right thing to do.
However, my personal opinion is that the Precision will do the job better because it will be a bit more in-your-face than the Jazz. The tone should be the prime factor.
Good luck!

according to the sound of it from your budget, i would get something that would be versatile enough to do what you need to not only for now, but also in the future. There is no specific kind of bass for screamo hardcore. I would get something that feels good first - for me it is P and J bass necks and body weight. You can change the sound using your amp, different pick-ups etc, but it is harder to change the weight or neck feel.

I have played in thrash, crossover /DC-type hardcore, and regular metal bands all my life, and my 72 Fender p-bass and 80 jazz bass have always done well. The p- is all stock, and the J is stock except for EMG pups that were put in back in the '80s

Also, don't be ashamed of Squires. You gotta get what you can now, and then get other stuff later when you have more $$$.

The biggest thing is feel. Don't compromise that...

You might look for a used Vintage Modified P Bass (or J Bass)...you can find them in the $150-$200 range if you look, sometimes cheaper.

You like the J, get the J. There are plenty of rock bassists playing J basses. If you're getting a bass to play in a band, though, my advice to your dad would be to hit your local craigslist and the TB classifieds for a used bass and amp rather than getting one of those starter packs -- the amps with those packs will not keep up with a drummer very well (especially in the heavier styles of music you're talking about) and he'll just be heading back to the store to spend more money in a few weeks - at which point you're sitting on a cheap practice amp you never use. That's unless you have a band PA you're plugging into or have someone else's amp to borrow.

You can probably pick up a used Squier or maybe one of the lower-model Ibanez basses on CL for around $100-150 and a used amp with 100 watts for 150-200 more. Throw in a tuner, strap and cords (which the CL sellers may toss in anyway) and you're good to go, or at least to get started.

Oh and PS, the Squier VM Jag is worth looking into, +1 to that; it has the slim neck of the jazz but a p/j pickup combination. However, they run $299 new so that will eat up your budget if you need an amp, unless you find a used one.
