By now you may have figured out why these type of threads never seem to work.

You list what you play, what you'd like to hear, and then...

...everyone just suggests whatever their favorite bass is, no matter what the criteria is.

pretty true. so to reiterate and add:

I play rock, jazz & funk.

Budget is up to $1500, but i'd prefer not to spend more than i have to.

I DON'T like Warwicks. I just don't. Don't suggest them.

I have/currently play a MM Stingray.

I vastly prefer passive pups to active.

Honestly, how CAN these threads work? There are hundreds of basses that would work great for "Rock, Jazz & Funk." Buying a bass is such a personal, individual matter there is no way to tell someone what to buy. The best advice has to be, go play each of the basses you are interested in and make a desicion based on your "test drives." Play basses you've never heard of or seen before, too. Play everything you can get your hands on. When you see someone playing live and like how it sounds, note the bass he/she is playing, and also the rig they are playing through.

+1

I have a few basses, any of which I would recommend to someone wanting suggestions.

My personal suggestion is that the OP should play each of the basses listed and decide which sounds and plays the best.

heh, don't think i haven't, i'm just indecisive enough that i figure a little nudge could never hurt, although i'm pretty much going with an old jazz i think.

Just buy used. No matter what. Then you wont lose money on it if its not your bag. I suggest a jazz or P though. Especialy if you already have a MM.
Or something more modern but you dont like active so there that goes.
If you knew a bit more of what you wanted you could probly get a stambaugh (speling?) for that much custom made
