Which cab sounds the best? need help

Hey fellow tbers,

My arsenal is almost complete. Just finished getting my new Rickenbacker copy with tweed case/plush black interior. sounds great through my marshall mb15.

Now that i got all my string gear, i'm getting an orange terror 500watt bass amp head.

Question is what cab should i get that sound's clear, gives me an equal amount of bass/treb/mids and isn't too big(2x8,10 or 12, 4x10)

I play mostly punk rock and i don't want an 8x10 cause it takes up too much room, pricy and weighs a lot!!!

I checked gallien krueger, fender and acoustic bass amps. but i couldn't get any feed back on how they sounded or even hear a sound preview. so if u guys have any, doesnt have to be the ones mentioned, give me feed back. how it sounds, price.

You really have to try some cabinets and decide what you like.

First off, cheap and sounds good do not go together. Second, a 500 watt bass amp will want enough speaker to open up, anything small and cheap will be easily destroyed. First rule of bass amplification- Don't Skimp on your Speakers. As far as what sounds "best", you need to go out and play through alot of gear to figure that out.

try some stuff, for my needs an orange obc 115 is great, but you may want more highs, or more volume, or a lighter cab

How can I possibly describe it to you? You'd have to hear it.

Loud enough for my needs.

Deep enough to sound nice. (Describe "nice.")

Enough mids for good note clarity.

If you want to be satisfied in your search, you're going to have to remove "cheap" from your criteria. Any of the fEARful designs will work, work well, and I'll pretty much guarantee there'll beano GAS.... If you shop well, you could build a 12/6-15/6 for under $1k.

Cheap cabs have too many performance compromises...

If $500 is a hard limit, you should unquestionably be looking for used gear.

I played a stingray through an orange tiny terror and gk neo 212 and was really pleased with the sound. Could definitely work for punk.

+1. A GK Neo 212 sounds like it may do the trick for you. It can benefit from some internal bracing and damping, IMO, but that is pretty easy to do yourself.

If you can stretch the budget just a little take a look at the Avatar TB153.

Chicken is kinda squawky in the mids, and a bit on the lean side. Beef has a much deeper voicing, fatter, with an overall more meaty tone.

For punk, I would go with a horn loaded 4x10. Avatar, Ampeg, G&K, Mesa and Marshall will all work, but Ampeg will have the tone you are looking to get.

Honestly, I would go with a matched Orange if you can get one, or raise your budget and find a higher end Ampeg.

If there is one thing I have learnt over the years, it is not good to skip on a good cab. A good head will sound bad through a bad cab. Kinda like the way a cheap bass will still sound killer through a sweet amp-but an expensive bass through a cheap amp will disappoint.

Spend the extra and get a SWR golight. I love mine and if you keep and eye open in the classified one pops up every so often for pretty decent money for what you get. And the weight is to die for.

Just dont settle. perhaps take the time and save up? It is an investment for the future after all.

Personally I'd steer clear of a 1x15" and look at a 4X10" or 2x12" cabinet. Ampeg would be my first choice if price was no object but they're beasts to carry around. GK is good value for the $$$ and a whole lot more transportable. Try MF' GK 410MBE =$449, GK Neo 2x12-II = $549.

mesa boogie diesel cabs are the s***! I bought mine for under $500. They are tight and punchy. They are not light weight or easy on the back though!

Why get a 500watt amp if u don,t get a cab that will handle it?
Seems to me that getting a great cab should be equally as important as getting a 500watg head.
+1 for fEARful cabs.

i havent got around to take any yet. but soon don't worry. And it's a guitar manufacturer called logical. They make great guitars/basses at an affordable price.
