Double Bass which EUB??

It's odd they have a distinct wood sound but don't get me wrong it's no true db. If anything somewhere between db & fretless ebg. From the videos I've seen & heard not as electric sounding as Ned steinberger likely because of the difference in pickups. Ergos are relatively inexpensive by comparison. I prefer the simplicity & appreciate the style.

cool. I would like to try one someday as the price is really nice and sometimes it is just such a pain or impossible to take the doghouse.

I've not owned an NS 42" scale bass but I have played them and I have owned a 34" scale NS OmniBass eub and an NS cello. They are very well built, good sounding instruments. My main complaint (and probably why I don't still own either) are the lack of heel block and upper bout reference points. The heel block is obvious but until you try to make friends with an instrument without a shoulder bout simulator you don't realize how much it's possible to rely on the bout as an intonation reference especially transitioning in and out of the thumb position. It may work well for you but I wouldn't buy it sight unseen or without a very thorough playing assessment.

Good point. Intonation is weird on these. Much more natural feeling on the bsx...

I'll second the Eminence. Just a beautiful instrument regardless.

I went the route of "pimpin" my el cheapo Stagg EDB after watching this video. A lot of players like the Stagg because the neck feels very similar to their real uprights (more so than some other much higher priced EUBs), and they're easy to upgrade. I did everything here except I swapped out the stock strings for Corelli 370Ms instead of the Pirastros he mentions. I have to say, after following these tips the bass sounds killer and very convincing!:



Stagg - $450
Revolution II PUP - $150 used
Corelli 370m - $119

$719 total

Impressive. I really like the fact that in addition to the right side bout extension to stand the bass off your body they put a little left side extension to give you that reference point on your left forearm in the thumb position. I've missed that on every EUB I've owned (with the exception of the Ampeg but that one had other issues).

I wish! They are just the EUB along with Ns Design that I have the most experience with. I would like to try an Eminence out one of these days and a nice Clevinger.

I own one of these, and have really enjoyed it. I have found though that a mic'ed cab lends itself to a more traditional upright sound - helps put a little room into the signal. The direct sound is good, I just prefer the cab sound (I mostly pay bluegrass). Every gig I've ever played with it, I've received compliments with the sound, it's just a great instrument in it's own right. I also agree with getting a DI that has some EQ options. I have an Aguilar Tone Hammer and it works great. I'd be afraid the Samsamp would color it a little too much, but I've never tried it on my EUB.
