Which one is hot?

So I have an indonesian built squier Pbass and installed new alpha pots, switchcraft jack and .047 orange drop cap.

Now I'm trouble shooting a few problems,

1st...The tone does nothing

2nd...The volume is full on and when you turn it down just a bit it goes full off.

One thing I didnt notice until now was that I assumed the white wire coming from the pick ups was the hot wire as in this diagram:

But revisiting the wiring, I noticed the red wire coming from the bass side pickup and the white wire coming from the treble side pickup.

Could my problem be that I have the wrong wire soldered to the volume pot terminal?

Whoops, may be on to something here, since I have no amp to try it with, I will need to pick up some batteries for my multi effects pedal, I may have fixed it.

I noticed the cavity shielding paint may be contacting one or more of the lugs on the pot, taped it up so no more contact, so now I need to run out and get some batteries!

wish me luck!
