Which Precision Bass?

I've never owned a P bass. I've been playing mostly Jazz Basses and Jazz Bass clones. I think that a Precision is missing in my arsenal. I hesitate between a new Squier Eva Gardner Sig. for the thin neck or a used MIM Standard precision, for an equivalent cost. Please give me your opinion.

I've never owned a Squier, and can't comment on that, but I've owned several MIMs and have been pretty happy with them. I am pretty sure the resale will be better also, if you decide to replace it later.

Gotta play it. I like chunkier necks, even put a P neck on my jazz.

If you can find a good deal on one that is already close to you, this would be my suggestion too. The Japanese basses are great. BUT I looked at purchasing one once and the shipping was over $100!

I have a Zane P bass being built right now from Zane guitars. I have never owned a P bass before and have a project coming up where one was requested. I was considering buying a cheap one but with my relationship with Zane, they built me one instead and it should be here soon. It is American made, better quality than Fender and most of the bass from the body, neck and head stock will all be hand made so it should be exciting to get this thing when it comes in sometime next month.

Any P-bass that feels and sounds good to you. They've made about 10,000 different models and some of the differences are trivial. For me, the MIM Jazz I owned was every bit as good a bass as my 1963 Precision. Don't worry about models, just play some and pick the one you like best.

The Fender Deluxe Active Precision Bass has a Jazz neck.

Play both if you can, and maybe try some P/J's as well. There are many P/J and Jaguar-type models available in that price range. Do yourself a favor and try some non-Fender models if available. I think ESP and Ibanez also make some P/J basses in that price range. Don't let Artist models, country of manufacture or headstock decals have an undue influence. Get the one that feels right. You'll know...
