Which reverb for both guitar and bass?

Hello talkbass,

I'm looking for a reverb that does both guitar and bass well. So far I've narrowed it down to the following options:

- Neunaber Immerse (Often recommended, but the demos don't convince me completely)
- Walrus Audio Fathom (Lots of different sounds I like, not sure for bass...)
- Mr. Black Bloodmoon (or Supermoon) (I love the modulation on this, again not sure for bass)
- Iron Ether Nimbus (not sure if this does guitars well?)

The cheapest option for me would be the Bloodmoon/Supermoon, Iron Ether is very hard to find in Europe, but I found one 2nd hand in France somewhere.

If you guys have any other suggestions, please...

I like the Nimbus on guitar, sounds great.

Really, bass is the problem instrument, so if it's good on bass, it's likely great on guitar.

The Meris Mercury7 is another good one.

I find that being able to control the bass frequency in the reverb path is what helps reverb work with bass. There are lots of ways to do this; using a more complex setup and running the verb parallel to your bass signal, with a high pass filter before the reverb makes any reverb useable. If that's too much work, then a pedal with a bass cut in the reverb signal is best. Again,not necessary, but helps keep the sound cleaner in the low end.

While I haven't tried a lot of "exotic" reverb pedals, I did come across the Matthews Effects Astronomer Reverb. I've been playing the version one for over a year. They just came out with version two and I received mine last week.

While there aren't a lot of different types of reverbs, the ones there are solid and useful. Plus the controls make them very versatile. The Glow control really changes the sound.

The initial thing that sold me was the way to switch between two different reverbs. Genius! I like things simple on the gig and this delivers. WYSIWYG for two different settings. You can pick the setting whether the effect is on or off. And with version two, we now have tails.

thanks for the replies so far guys, appreciate the tips, although it didn't help me much so far. It just seems like the more reverb pedal demos I hear, the more GAS I get, there's just too much choice! I've been looking into the Neunaber Wet as well, how does that fare on bass?

Take a look at the new Alexander Space Race.

DRY THROUGH, Standard sized box, 9v with 4 presets. You can 'ramp' between parameter settings with an expression pedal or single footswitch.

It really sounds great. Spring, Modulated, Shimmer up and down, LoFi, Plate. You can turn the shimmer off and also dial back the LoFi.

The trails mode has an auto fade

Here's a clip of the Alexander Space Race on bass. I'm just using the Spring mode that I would use on guitar. Expression pedal is set to increase the Reverb time and Mix.

The hiss is coming from my amp. Note that the beginning is no verb. Then I engage the verb (no hiss change), and then I gradually increase the reverb time/blend and the low end stays intact and the base tone doesn't change.

You can then do the opposite and gradually fade it back to a light mix and then turn it off.
OR you can go up to a high mix and turn it off and the trails carry over.
Pretty great. You can get way more dramatic with it....epsecially in the other modes.

Neunaber would totally work, but I personally didnt like it, because I jumped on the hype train and while being an awesome pedal, it was not as awesome as anticipated.
I personally use an Earthquaker Avalanche Run, Strymon BigSky and a Digitech Polara for guitar and bass.
The Pad setting of the Polara is on bass rather subtle, but when you use it eith guitar it really blooms !
