I sing lots of background vocals but haven't sung lead in my band(s) since I'm not confident about my voice. Anyway, there are three songs I always sing at home while playing bass:

- Goin' Blind (Kiss)
- American Life (Primus)
- Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd)

I didn't do vocals very often when I played with my cover band. That song I did sing on were Phish's "Mike's Song" and Brian Adams' "Summer of '69".

I also did spare backups here and there, tunes like The Spin Doctor's "Two Princes" and Phish's "Down With Disease" come to mind.

With practice, I'd think you should be able to learn to sing over just about any tune. Any tune you'd be doing at a cover gig, at least.

I can sing songs and i can play bass but i really can't do them together to save my life. The one song i was always able to sing and play was Sublime's Santeria. It is just a fun song wiht a bouncy bass line that i was able to sing along too. oh and Herbie Hancock's Chameleon, it just has such moving lyrics

I'm similar - I do a lot of BVs, but don't think my voice is great for lead, but I have done Tie Your Mother Down about a million times in various bands and also do Day Tripper regularly (I thought that would be impossible when we first started doing it but I find it really easy now).

I think he used to simplify some of the lines live as well. When you listen to the way he used to mess around with the vocal timing you start to realise just how talented the man was.

Try singing and playing the James Brown stuff and Just a Gigalo. It can be a little funky at first. I been doing it so many years I cant imagine it ever being difficult. I have found if I let my hands do what they know I am alright. Usually when I make a slip is when I become conscious of what my hands are doing. Play from the heart and sing from the soul, it shows!
