Which Strings to Use

Which strings are better for the German made Hofner Club Bass 500/2?

If you want the classic Höfner tone you will need Pyramid Golds. The Pyramids are almost as important as the bass itself if you're looking for the classic Höfner tone/feel IMO. I mean, these strings were literally designed specifically for Höfners back in the day. It's a wonderful combination. Pyramid Golds are always my first choice for Höfners.

LaBellas's are nice strings too but I've always liked their long scale sets much better than their short scale sets (and the opposite with the Pyramid Golds btw, I don't like the long scale Gold sets very much).

But the photo Hofner 500/2 Club Bass Guitar Sunburst | Guitar Center they have online looks like a Contemporary Bass (see attached) Or maybe another? Invalid Link Removed pages 38 & 39. It is on back order right now. I told Guitar Center to call me before they ship to make sure it is the right bass.

That catalog is really fascinating! I really like that they are trying to implement more local material into their builds. They call it green line but it's actually doing so in the right way. Nüremberg is litterally in the middle of a huge mountain range with forest going every direction. It only makes sense to try and utilize the local lumber and try and make something unique. Oak, cedar, spruce, walnut, everything indigenous. Basically the way violins and other stringed instruments would have been built in that part of the world. I've heard some of the Bohemian and baroque instruments and it's absolutely amazing!

I would try to get pictures of the exact bass you're buying and see what you think. Pictures never tell the whole story. However I don't think guitar center would be peddling fake Höfners.

I made a contact at Guitar Center who stated he would make sure it was the right one before shipping. But one thing that bugged me. We could not agree on the Hofner icon located on the top left where the neck and body connect. He said he had never seen it before on the German made one. I did send him the catalog (page 38) and this link - Höfner 500/2 Club Bass - YouTube - I just think somebody just entered the wrong photo (too many different models) when creating the web page. But when you spend that kind of money you want to make sure. I created this post mainly for the string question and if somebody out there noticed the photo as a mistake (maybe an Asian built Hofner) but not a fake Hofner.

The Pyramid strings will fit both of those basses.
