recently I picked up a Presonus Studiolive 16.4.2 and it's great. Its so great that I sold off all of my other PA stuff (Allen and Heath Mixwizard, Zed12, DBX Driverack PA+) and I am a digital convert. I am looking to pick up a smaller mixer for those gigs where I don't need to lug out the 16.4.2. I have the option of picking up a SL16.0.2 at a very reasonable price, or I can go with a Mackie DL1608 (I already have an ipad)... which way would you go? I have seen and played with a 16.0.2 and been impressed... never used the Mackie. I can get the Mackie for around $200 less than the Presonus.

I might be waiting a little bit for whatever Presonus is coming out with next. With the advent of the new 32.4,2 desk, they introduced an Ethernet port which eliminates the need for the PC if you don't record your shows.this is using a new web app that will make the product doable from Tablet or iPad or Droid or whatever can access a web browser.

If thinking about the Mackie, consider this. Presonus makes the AudioBox1818VSL that runs universal control, and a pair of those would run you around a grand, and it would give you the ability of an 18x18 mixer. Its GUI is very close to the regular Universal Control surface on the iPad app. Sounds like a SL board. Weighs a heck of a lot less too. And maybe for your smaller stuff, just one of them would do you. That leaves you with a stand alone 8x10 mixer with front panel analog trim pots. But as mentioned at some point this year they are going to roll the next batch out.

But we are seeing the current SL consoles getting their prices dropped another couple hundred bucks in a current "special" which I'm sure is aimed at getting ready to roll the next gen out with the Ethernet port.

no the reason the current special is happening is because they have realised how over priced they currently are in comparison to features than other consoles, and have taken a hit.

personally i don't really have a brand biasing (apart from preferring A&H consoles to anything else...lol) but i think that the 32ch is a complete step backwards for presonus. to release a 32ch version in which is a hardware updated version of the previous frame sizes (16,24), and not change any real feature (apart from adding smaart), an not putting it in the $3500 price bracket was a mistake. when other brands (soundcraft, and behringer) have done that and given more features (debatable i know).

anyways thats my 2 cents worth...

Believe it or not- look at the Behringer x32. I would have never recommended anything from this company before this board but the guys from Midas are involved and it's a sweet little board. It's been out long enough to have a good record and thE x32 gets a lot of love over in the prosound forum and prosound web community
