Who bikes to work?

Here in Wisconsin the weather is getting warmer, and it's a little less chilly on the way to work! Today I was actually able to ride in without a stocking cap under my helmet.

Who else rides to work? There's plenty of reasons to! Health, gas, fun... I don't do it for any terribly ideological reasons; it's mostly just fun for me. It's only 5 miles one way, so it's just enough to get my heart going but not bad enough that I get to work wiped out. It gets easier every day, too.

Here's my lean, mean, purple and green commuting machine:

I'm working my way up to it, actually. I live about 6 miles from the shop, but it's pretty hilly here (well, to my flatlander Louisiana/Florida heritage it is! :spit: ), and need to get in just a bit better shape for the trip to and from.

The good thing is that Greensboro, NC is actually fairly bike-friendly, plenty of wide streets and lots of parkland with bike/walk trails on the way from the house to the shop.

I don't have a photo of the bike handy, but I just bought a Kona Smoke. Based on reputation, it'll be fully bulletproof, and I really dig the understated appearance (flat black EVERYTHING). It rides great as well.

I *wish*! Work is about 20 miles away. The only way to get there is on, first, a winding 2-lane with no shoulder, and then a winding 4-lane with a 55 mph speed limit and little-to-no-shoulder. I'd be taking my life in my hands.

With gas prices at $2.77 here for regular, biking would be nice, but its just too far, and too dangerous.

Finally had a moment to get a photo of my baby, or at least a link to Kona's site for it:

I got a 20" frame, my wife dug it so much she talked me into getting a 22" for her (her legs are longer than mine, so the higher frame works better for her! ).
