Who builds custom necks for clients?

Same here. And I get to watch him. He's very good at making custom necks. The engineering and quality of his necks are right up there with any of the big name Luthiers.

You can afford Jeremy. He has his ego under control and works for very reasonable prices. A custom neck won't cost much more than a Warmoth.
Speaking of which, what Warmoth makes are custom necks - they have more options than anyone other than the guys that do one offs. Depending on what options you want, they might be your ticket - their stuff is VERY good.
You aren't that far from us. We're about 55 miles north of Eagle Rock. Come on up and visit the Secret Underground Lab sometime.

Okay, that's pretty. But to me, that's not really a custom neck. It's a Fender pattern Strat neck, built exactly to their design and dimensions, just made from a piece of highly figured flame maple. Yep, it sure is pretty. If you are into that sort of thing.
I personally am not a fan of highly figured flame maple for necks. I've built hundreds of them. It may be beautiful and expensive, but it's pretty crappy wood. I would much rather have a neck of clear straight-grain maple. Sorry. I'm sure I've hurt some feelings.

Jeremy told me the exact same thing. And I believed him of course.
My point was, after buying the blank, paying for labor, and paying for finishing, it would be about $900. That particular Warmoth neck is $800. That was my only point.
Jeremy makes necks for serious bass players! Necks that stay true for a lifetime! Cool options. But he doesn't do any custom work like inlays. I LOVE the roasted look, and wanted it on my U5.
I have contacted Sire about purchasing a U5 neck, where I can do my tricks. Wood dye. I can mimic both tiger maple stripes, and chatoyance stripes as well. But I think it may be done on a fretless neck. Waaaay easier to sand down, and dye.
I may be the only one ... but the natural maple against the dark sunburst just doesn't look right to me.

I have not met either one of you in person yet. But I’m looking forward to doing so. I’m about 75 minutes from Fillmore (I live in Bakersfield and Pine Mountain Club). A good friend had Jeremy do some work and was very happy. One would think Bakersfield would have some quality luthiers/builders. The old timers are gone. One guy who is supposedly good disappointed me with mediocre work on a simple fret end dress. I could have done a better job on my own.

How "custom" are you looking for? I don't have anything for you but an anecdote.
If you are looking for custom construction, but to meet the heel dimensions of a Fender body, and either a 30", 32", or 34" scale, I had Tucker Freestone make one to my specifications and it is my favorite neck of all my basses. But if you want more custom (e.g. nonstandard scale length, different heel dimensions), then this would not be an option.
He has some standard headstock shapes, but also can provide a paddle headstock for you to customize further. He has a "custom request" field in his order form, so perhaps he could cut some shape you send him. Here you can also request custom nut widths, neck depths, etc.
Freestone Guitars 100% satisfied with his work and price was reasonable.
He is a one man operation, so there is a wait time for the order and communication. He is actually local to me, so I picked up my neck from him and got to meet him and he and his shop are the real deal.

I want to mention I am extremely happy with the fretless neck builds @Freekmagnet aka Jeremy has done for me.
I've made odd request...fretboard extention, zero ebony fret, change my old nut into a string holder, Brass inserts in heal... I've even brought him my own lumber and he nailed it everytime at a price so reasonable I felt I had to tip him...... carry on.
