The Who By Numbers was released I was losing interest. Even then they sounded tired. “Squeezebox” was such a dumb juvenile song, coming from a bunch of 30-year-olds.

My Generation album was barely promoted here, but I knew this older girl who had a copy of the “The Kids Are Alright” single, so I got to hear that before the second album(
HJ over here)came out. By 1982,
It’s Hard at least had the saving grace of “Eminence Front”, but the rest of it was just pedestrian or run-of-the-mill, and everything else after
Odds And Sods, including
Who Are You, did nothing for me.
I saw them at a peak moment in 1970, again in ‘76 for old times’ sake, and even once more in ‘80, after the rejuvenation of their entire career(especially the early stuff)due to the
Kids Are Alright and
Quadrophenia movies plus the adulation of the newer mod movement at the time, but the horn section was a bit much, a bit Vegas, and Kenny Jones, what can I say? A great drummer…for the Small Faces/Faces, but they should have gotten Simon Phillips instead. I was absolutely done with them, Entwistle or not. The Jam had become my jam, as well as the opening act for the ‘80 tour, The Pretenders.
