What does or can SPDIF accomodate, exactly? I didn't know what SPDIF even was until I Googled it, but even knowing now what SPDIF cables are, I wouldn't even know if those would be something I could even use now of in the future.

What does or can SPDIF accomodate, exactly? I didn't know what SPDIF even was until I Googled it, but even knowing now what SPDIF cables are, I wouldn't even know if those would be something I could even use now of in the future.
To me, the single most important thing is that the line in bypasses the mic pre and goes straight to the ADC. This way i can use a standalone mic pre and just use the interface for digital conversion. Granted a single channel mic pre is more than your budget for the whole interface, but if you want to upgrade in the future, this is a great way to improve the sound. After that, digital expansion via SPDIF/AES/ADAT/MADI.
I've seen fewer and fewer interfaces with this feature, which is unfortunate as it would greatly expand the use-cases for a given interface. Many claim that at unity gain the built-in preamp won't add any color, but I've never really bought that line from manufacturers.
Interfaces with more line inputs than mic pres are about the only options, which includes the M4 (to bring it back to OP questions).
