Been listening to a Spotify setlist that a band apparently posted for potential bassists to listen to. Lots I don't know! Including this one, that sounds both classic and current recording-wise:



Anyone know anything about this bassist and/or group? Google doesn't turn up much other than links...

Great playing, very snappy, but overall it's just generic funk to my ears. I'd just stay with the Al Green original, those records of his had such a singular unique groove and sound to them.

Harsh! Just kidding, I hear what you're saying. Obviously nothing holds a candle to the original stuff. I think it struck me because it was buried in a playlist of classic tracks from the 60s. I listened to other songs from the album - so far, "Love & Happiness" seems like the best one I've heard.

Personally, I like updates of classic tracks, like this James Brown remix by Plastic Fantastic Machine:



Remakes/remixes are rarely better than the original, but they can be worth listening to, and sometimes they can be really good!

Meh, worse yet still is when they do a 'perfect' take, but a bland arrangement. It may be modernized, but I'm not hearing anything interesting being brought to the table on that.

I don't know, there are different kinds of covers - so much depends on a variety of factors. This could be a cool thread if it's own! (I'd be surprised if it wasn't done at some point)
