Who supplies the D.I.?

The Crack house? The worst part was the guy used to roadie for us back in the day and was acting like I'm his long lost buddy. How embarrassing, plus I had to help him eq the snare for the opening act. This was an eight band festival with $60 tickets. The business card he gave me looked professional. Sure haven't seen him out mixing sound since.....
house should always have one but that doesn't mean it's a good one. so i always bring my own in case theirs is poopie or broken.
The DI from my GK MB500 head is very good. I do bring a Radial Pro-DI just in case the amp head fails or something.
Forgot to add - if I was doing a gig where I knew I was gonna go DI with no amp, I would probably use my VT Bass DI. I have a Para-Driver too.
Next time you can cut some small Ivory soap squares, put em in a small plastic baggie and dangle it in front of him...tel him "do good and you'll get what you deserve...".

I seem to have accrued DIs over the years so I always have my own. All my amps have DI out too, so there's an embarrassment of riches in that area.
I have my ToneBone, a REDDI, there's always a handful of Radial ProDIs kicking around too (those are dirt cheap and do a decent job, I'd buy one if I were you and have it on hand just in case).

To bring it back around to the thread, there were enough well prepared pros there we were able to cobble together a complete sound system and backline, including using my direct boxes. Actually sounded good on stage and out front. I am in league with all of the others on live gigs, usually the house will have a DI that the soundfolkie prefers, or they might take the DI from my amp GK MB500 (never had any problems) or if they need one I have a decent passive DI on my pedal board. I will sometimes also carry my preferred mic, CAD KBM412, depending on the gig. Word to the wise if you do decide on taking something cool be sure it is marked so you don't have to fight with the soundie, lesson learned the hard way, my Type 85 is engraved.

You should always be prepared, you want to be heard, you need to make sure you have the tools to do it.
Assume the sound guy has nothing, and you'll always be prepared.
I don't gig without one. My amp (mb800f) has one and I also keep a darkglass VMD on hand when I play.
I would assume that you should always have a DI on hand, unless you know for sure otherwise. Even then, you should bring your own because the one they provide might be crap or not work at all. One of my gigs is a church gig that provides a DI, but I always bring mine anyway. They're small and nothing to throw in your bag. Like others have said, don't leave home without one.
I think part of being professional is coming prepared. We carry extra DIs, mics, cables, strings, and various tools with us to every gig. Always be prepared.

most of your post is spot-on, but i disagree with this. i didn't put in decades of learning and adjusting and thousands of dollars getting the sound i want to hear just to run a dry signal from my bass to FOH EQed by some dipsh1t half-deaf sound guy who can't tell 1K from 10K. i know how to set gain stages. you're taking the DI feed *i* give you, taken *after* my effects and preamp at a minimum and if you're a jerk about it i'll mic my cabs as well. EQ it for your hall and your rig, OK, that's fine, but otherwise it's going to be the way *i* want it. 70% of the time i can run sound better than the hall's hired hack anyway.
plus i'm also going to come out to your desk while i'm playing (wireless FTW!) and twiddle the knobs if i don't like it! ;-)

I love my JDI.
Pro tip: The JDI can play at speaker level too and has built in EQ filtering to simulate a mic'd cab. Useful for tube amps, or in case your guitar player forgot to bring his backup mic.
I've also used it in the studio this way with great results.
