Double Bass who uses Pops rosin?

Even though it is messy, I use Pops exclusively because no other rosin works as well. Maybe it's because I can get fresh Pops rosin and have never used any of the others when they are fresh. The freshness does really make a huge difference because old dried out Pops is just as unworkable as the Carlson's that I have tried. If that is the problem and there is somewhere I can get fresh Carlson's I'd be willing to give it another try, but, otherwise, just give me the Pops.

I use Pops and Oak rosin. I moved to Houston in the August my Medium Oak rosin has been best so far.
I do think bassists should start with Pops since it is the standard. Pops and Spiros is what I reccomend people start with. Then move other directions from there.

I use both bows, too. More German but I always have a French around and use the French grip on my German when I need it.

I use Pops. Sparingly as too much chokes the bow.
Store my pops in the fridge when I'm not using it so its nice & hard when I rosin making it difficult to over rosin. Learnt this from tutor. Does anyone else do this?
I live in Penang, Malaysia so the temperature & humidity is high which is another reason I store my pops in the fridge.

ive never tried pops, but i do use oak soft. can anyone compare the feel of pops to oak soft? are they similar? one thing i notice about the oak, it doesnt leave a mess on the bass. not much on the strings either, but i do feel like i need to rerosin more often than with other brands ive tried, but that's fine with me.

Oak soft is a lot smoother and grips better. I find Oak soft and med. are better over a layer on pops on the bow.

but how long will a fresh cup of Pops be fresh?
how can I see if it is not fresh (enough) anymore?

I used Pops for about 10 years and then switched to the Kolstein winter rosin. I found it to have better grab than the Pops. I found putting a cake of pops in the microwave just enough to get it slightly warm and soft helped make an old cake of Pops play a lot better.

When You but a new cake take a pen & mark the month & year You bought it on the paper on the bottom. Ex-today, 9/10. Throw it out in 6 months to a year. I do it about every 6 months. I also use some Carlson soft a little sometimes.

good idea.

I don't want to throw away a good cup. I also think it can a last a year or so and still be good.

How can you tell from the rosin when it is too old? will it be too hard, cracked or look funny or something?

About how long does that take? I've always been a bit skittish about trying this.

When I see how cracked some of the Pops from my orchestra colleagues looks I think 'how did that happen'. My Pops never looks cracked and always stays pretty clean. I can see the bottom from the top.

When I see people with rosin like that, I pass my fresh cake down so they can use mine. I love the look of amazement when they see the difference in how it plays.

I always give my cake from "two months ago" to someone who doesn't have the where-with-all to spring for a fresh cake. (except for one cheap-skate college professor who clearly makes 6 figures and is always hounding me for a cake - YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE Larry!)
